Went to wash the car at usual place behind the VW/Audi/Merc dealership, this time one of their car transporters had the ramp down, or not the ramp but... the whole fucking chassis articulates to get a better angle. The cab almost looks like this:

Is it FWD? How does that work with the drive shaft?

They're RWD, but is it body on frame? If so, the chassis might not be articulating. It might just be the body.

good point. I think its the chassis that is articulating though. If you look closely you don't see any frame rails lying flat under the bed/cab. You appear to be correct in the MB doesn't offer a FWD variant for the sprinter.

I suppose this is because it's in Europe there's a need for it to have a smaller footprint.

Maybe? Also the angle between the ramp and the bed, which can get nasty for low-sitting cars with a long wheelbase, gets completely eliminated.

Well, not necessarily. Usually breakdown trucks are rather bigger than this - something like this, also a Merc as it happens. The bending Sprinter may just be a low cost option for smaller patients.
